So, this month I took the big leap and faced my fears. I battled what had once seemed impossible. And I survived.
I took my three year-old to the movie theater.
With the release of Toy Story 3 this summer I knew that it was time to finally venture to the movies because my son is a bit of a Trekkie when it comes to Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang. I tried to prepare myself mentally for the possibility of meltdowns mid-previews, hysterical fear of the dark, and general I've-been-sitting-still-for-too-long-Mom, but alas, there was no need because the whole adventure went perfectly. My son sat beside me, with his trusty bag of popcorn, and enjoyed the flick with the rest of the kids around us. I was proud (not to mention emotional sucker punched by the movie itself) and became instantly excited by this new possibility of taking my son to the movies. Luckily, these next couple of weeks feature a few great ones to help you escape the summer heat, indulge in matinee prices, share some laughs and split some popcorn with your best little guy or gal.
1. 'Toy Story 3' For starters, because if you haven't seen it then GO! As both a parent and a moviegoer, Pixar has yet to disappoint me, and Toy Story 3 is no exception. We watch the first two in my house quite a bit, so I went into it really familiar with the plots and characters, and ten minutes in I was choked up. From the trailers, you clearly know that this one is going to tug those mom heartstrings with Andy heading off to college, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. You can't help but watch those characters you're so familiar with and then glance at your little one and just want to stop time for a little while. So get ready to laugh and cheer, but moms and dads, I've got two words for you: bring tissues. Release: Already out. Here's the trailer:
2. 'The Last Airbender' The live-action feature film is based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is one that my husband is pretty excited to go and see, and I'll admit to being excited enough, even though I've never seen the series, but actor Jackson Rathbone (Twilight films) is in it, and I'm a bit of a sucker for him. According to my husband though, the film is a fantasy series that takes place in a spiritual, magical world where Earth, Air, Water and Fire nations once lived together in harmony, until the day the Fire Nation attacked, wiping out the Air Nation. And now a 12-year-old boy named Aang is his world's last hope for peace. I'm expecting fun action and special effects and a plot that'll have my son battling the elements in our backyard. Release: July 1st.
3. 'Despicable Me' And now this is one we're all pretty excited about! The trailer was played during Toy Story 3, and drew laughs from my husband, son and myself. My husband and I are already huge Steve Carrell fans, who voices the character Gru. Our charming villain has am army of minions who are so adorable I wanted to take them all home with me just from watching the trailer. In the film, Gru is all things wicked and evil, and is in the midst of his most dastardly evil plan yet ––steal the moon, really–– when he's entrusted with taking care of three orphan girls. A tagline for the film? "The world’s (second) greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes." I'm sold. Releases: July 9th. Here's the trailer:
So get the kids together and head out to the movies this summer. I'll be the one down in front laughing just as loud as her kid.
